WATCH on 8th 9th and 10th April 2024 (all starting at 9pm).
Channel 4’s landmark 3-part series, “Defiance: Fighting the Far Right” tell the story of the struggles of how British Asians fought back against a tide of racist violence between 1976 and 1981, from Southall to Brick Lane to Bradford. The story of Southall Youth Movement and SYM’s inspirational fight back against racist violence is central to the resistance of Asian communities against racist violence and the demands for justice.
The Defiance documentaries show all the key events in Southall, that captured national attention and remain central to the struggles of Asian communities – the racist murder of Gurdip Charger in June 1976, the meeting of the racist National Front in Southall Town Hall and the murder of Blair Peach by police in April 1979 and the burning of the Hambrough tavern pub in 1981. It also features the struggles against racist violence in East London, Waltham Forest and Bradford and the resistance of Bangladeshi Youth Movement and Bradford Asian Youth Movement Brick Lane, which were inspired by Southall Youth Movement.
For the first time, Defiance: Fighting the Far Right recognises, documents and shows Asian peoples’ resistance and contributions which has largely been missing within the wider story of black struggles.
